Dr. Susan Biro

Susan Biro is Manager, Online Learning in the Division of Information Technology where she leads initiatives to enhance and expand online teaching and learning. With more than 25 years of experience in higher education as both administrator and instructor, Susan brings a collaborative and learner-centered approach to supporting inclusive, accessible online and hybrid courses and programs.

She specializes in Universal Design for Learning, Open Educational Resources, and the Quality Matters (QM) framework.

At UMBC, Susan serves as one of the institution’s QM Coordinators. She is QM-certified as a Course Review Manager, a Peer Reviewer, and an Independent Online APPQMR Facilitator. In January 2024, Dr. Biro was selected to serve on the Quality Matters Academic Advisory Council for a three-year term and invited to serve a second term. The Council provides guidance to and oversight of the programmatic directions and initiatives of Quality Matters.

Susan was an inaugural member of UMBC’s Microcredential Review Board (MRB) and invited to serve a second term. The MRB is dedicated to evaluating and approving microcredential proposals.

She is an affiliate assistant professor in the post-master’s Certificate in College Teaching and Learning Sciences and teaches PSYC 501: Applied Learning Science.

Susan earned both a Doctor of Education with a specialization in Leadership in Higher Education and a Master of Education in Adult Education from Widener University (PA), and she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Delaware State University.
