Course Design & Instruction

Teaching online is very different from teaching in the classroom — both pedagogically and technologically. An intentional approach to course design can support student learning, engagement, and the achievement of learning objectives or course competencies. Your course will transform as you work to develop it and continue to make changes from one semester to the next.

Modes of Instruction

Instructional Technology supports the design and delivery of courses in multiple instructional formats. Common course modalities include:

  • Online courses may be synchronous, meeting online simultaneously at pre-determined times during the term, or asynchronous, without live online course meetings.
  • Hybrid or blended courses combine in-person class meetings with synchronous or asynchronous online instruction.
  • Hyflex courses are held in-person for students, while at the same time, synchronously “live streamed” to students who opt to attend remotely. Read more about Hyflex at UMBC.
  • In Person or Face-to-Face courses are held on campus for all class sessions.
