Doing practice while reading generates the
Doer Effect for students—a learning science principle that proves the causal relationship between doing practice and increased outcomes. In order to bring this method to more students, Dr. Rachel Van Campenhout, research scientist at VitalSource, will share how she and her colleagues have applied artificial intelligence to generate practice questions that were added as a free study feature for thousands of textbooks in the Bookshelf platform, also used at UMBC. The broad applications of the Bookshelf CoachMe practice questions will be discussed as well as preliminary research findings.

Note: This workshop is also part of the Spring 2023 data science and learning analytics workshops. More info.
