This session will provide an overview of resources available to support the common accommodation needs for students who are deaf or have a hearing impairment. Students with disability accommodations may require sign language interpreters and captioning/transcriptions of all audio and video materials.  We will provide an overview of the options that Student Disability Services (SDS) and DoIT provide UMBC users to meet students’ accommodation needs. Transcription/captioning is now a legal requirement for all public universities (Section 504 and Title II of the American with Disabilities Act) and all students benefit from the availability of transcribed/captioned content which increases accessibility and increases  retention and comprehension. 

In the session, answers to some common questions will be addressed including:

  • I just received a letter from SDS requiring accommodations for a student who is deaf or has a hearing impairment. What do I do now?

  • Where can I find SDS accommodations support for faculty?

  • How do I include a sign language interpreter or live transcriptionist?

  • How do I caption pre-recorded lectures and synchronous online course meetings?

  • How do I ensure that my course materials are in an accessible format?

This session will be facilitated by Dr. Peter Ariev, Instructional Design Specialist, Josh Abrams, Instructional Design Specialist, and Michael Canale, Assistant Director in the Office of Student Disability Services.
