Orienting Your Online Learners: QM General Standard 1
Create a strategy that welcomes and orients all learners
Location

Date & Time
March 8, 2023, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm – Canceled
Description
Imagine you are a new student logging into your course for the first time. Would you know where to get started, what to do first, how to work through content, or how to get help? Students decide within 2 minutes of logging in for the first time whether an online course will be good or bad -- based on how well the course is organized (Smith, 2014).
Help students get started in your online or blended course through an intentional and thoughtful course design. Quality Matters (QM) General Standard 1 helps inform these practices to support student learning and success.
Did you know the Blackboard Ultra course shell has been designed to help all courses meet QM General Standard 1: Course Overview & Introduction?
Whether or not you are familiar with Quality Matters or the rubric, please join us for this interactive workshop where participants will be able to:
- Recall QM General Standard 1 as it relates to orienting online learners to your course
- Identify best practices for getting started in Blackboard
- Explore eLearning Resources
- Assess existing course overview and introduction
- Create a strategy to enhance course overview and introduction
About QM
Grounded in evidence-based practice research, peer review, and collegiality, Quality Matters is used by more than 40,000 educators and instructional designers worldwide to strengthen online and blended course design.
At UMBC, Quality Matters served as the foundation for the PIVOT program, and there is evidence to suggest strong course design has an impact on student satisfaction with courses and course organization.
