As part of his ACE fellowship with USM Chancellor Jay Perman last year, Acting Dean of CoEIT Anupam Joshi explored the impact of scholarships on STEM student success at UMBC between 2013 and 2016, and at UMGC in 2014. "Preliminary results clearly establish that scholarships help STEM majors graduate regardless of need levels, but show very significant improvements for high need students," says Joshi, who is working with the USM to perhaps expand the scope of his study to other USM schools. In this data science community of practice meeting, Joshi will share more detailed findings, including minimum and maximum amounts of funding needed to impact student success, as well as possibilities to use machine learning to predict future student success.
