When it comes to understanding student engagement, how does what students say compare with what they do? In this presentation, Laila Shishineh, Director of UMBC's Academic Engagement & Transition Programs (AETP), will share findings from UMBC's Fall 2023 participation in the Beginning College Student Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) as well as Spring 2024 plans for the companion "National" SSE (NSSE). As such, Shishineh's insights and lessons learned about what students say can help complement -- and deepen, or even sharpen -- what might be inferred from traditional, digital proxies of learning analytics like Blackboard or myUMBC. Taken together, these mixed methods can inform what we think we know, understand, or can do to improve student engagement generally.
